There are many software applications available most of which will apply drive cleanup
techniques, in their own style. A popular example is the content cleaner, several
are for-profit software and some are open source. Also remember that there is much
more these applications can perform; there are many that also do free space cleaning,
clean up porn files, detect the presence of illegal or unlicensed software, and
analyzed used and free space.
There are many arguments as to why cleaning out unwanted files from your hard drive
is a good habit to get into. How fast your PC operates while reading out files from
storage is dependent upon, amongst other things, how many and how large the files
are on the hard drive. Usually you will find that with more stored files, the FAT
(file allocation) tables grow and the hard drive works harder when files are accessed.
It is common that files become fragmented (broken up into smaller pieces) and this
gets worse, the more files there are. Data security is also a factor, when you have
a large number of your personal data files, the higher the chance is that somebody
accessing your computer could find and misuse these files. Also removing any excess
files will obviously recover space that may then be used for storing files you do
need.
It is possible to derive improvement in system speed by spending a little time cleaning
out your pc system. The computer can run faster when they have a smaller number of
files that are to be stored and kept on the machine. Any space restored as a result
of the cleanup procedure will reduce the load on the FAT tables and improve performance.
And when doing a defrag the outcome is improved when the hard drive is not cluttered
with many useless files. Also, when private files are deleted, the chance is lessened
that they can be misused by untrusted parties.
